On-page prompts are question buttons you add to specific spots on your website, like a product page. When a shopper taps a prompt such as "Do these run true to size?", Chat opens with that question already sent, and Gladly AI answers right away.

Most shoppers with a question never stop to ask it. On-page prompts put the right question in front of them at the moment they're deciding whether to buy, so hesitations about fit, care, or shipping get answered before they cost you a sale.

You can write the prompts yourself, or let Gladly AI write them for each page based on what's on that page. On-page prompts work alongside your Chat bar or button – they don't replace it.

Before you start

  • On-page prompts are available for Agentic Commerce customers using Enhanced Chat. To learn more, see What is Agentic Commerce? and Create and Configure Enhanced and Basic Chat (Web).

  • Ask Gladly to turn on on-page prompts. This feature is opt-in. Contact your Account Manager or Gladly Support, and once it's on, the option to add on-page prompts appears in your Chat settings.

  • Plan for a little help from your web developer. Adding prompts to your site usually means a small change to your website's code. Bring your developer in before you start the placement step.

  • Start small. We recommend turning prompts on for one page or one product type first, seeing how shoppers use them, and then expanding.

How on-page prompts work for shoppers

  1. A shopper lands on a page where you've added prompts and sees a row of pill-shaped buttons. The buttons use the same colors, fonts, and styling as your Chat.

  2. The shopper taps a prompt.

  3. Chat opens with that question already sent, and Gladly AI answers it.

  4. If the shopper already has a conversation open, the question goes into that conversation instead of starting a new one.

Add on-page prompts

  • Click the menu icon in the top left corner.

  • Click Settings.

  • Under the Channels category, click Chat.

  • Go to Chat launchers and click Add on-page prompts.

  • Enter a Name for this set of prompts. Pick something that tells your team where it shows, like "Footwear product pages." Shoppers don't see this name.

  • Choose which pages the prompts can show on:

    • All pages – Prompts can show anywhere on your site, except pages you add as exceptions.

    • Specific pages – Prompts show only on the pages you list.

    • Exceptions – Pages where prompts should never show, even if they'd otherwise match.

  • Choose where the prompts appear on the page. You have two options:

    • Embed code – Copy the code Gladly gives you and have your developer paste it into your site's HTML where you want the prompts to appear. This always requires a change to your website.

    • CSS selector – Enter a CSS selector to attach the prompts to an element that's already on your page, like your size selector or Add to cart button. Your developer can tell you the right selector to use. Depending on how your site is built, this may not need any change to your website.

  • Set how many prompts show at once, from 1 to 10.

  • Choose a Layout:

    • Stacked – Prompts appear one on top of the other.

    • Side by side – Prompts appear in a row.

  • Write your Default prompts. These are the questions shoppers see if you don't use AI-generated prompts, or if Gladly AI can't generate prompts for a particular page. Write them the way a shopper would ask, such as "How do I wash this?" or "When will this arrive?"

  • (Optional) Turn on AI-generated prompts to have Gladly AI write prompts for each page based on that page's content. Add guidance to steer what it emphasizes, such as "Focus on sizing and fit" or "Highlight materials and care."

  • Click Save.

Place prompts close to where shoppers hesitate

Prompts just under the size selector on a footwear page, or next to the care details on an apparel page, tend to make more sense to shoppers than prompts at the bottom of the page.

Ideas for using on-page prompts

  • Sizing and fit – Add prompts under the size selector so shoppers can ask "Do these run true to size?" instead of guessing.

  • Care and materials – Surface questions like "How do I wash this?" when care details are buried lower on the page.

  • Gift shopping – During busy seasons, add default prompts like "Is this a good gift for a runner?" to your top product pages.

  • Service pages – Add prompts about returns or order tracking to those pages so shoppers can get help in one tap.

Considerations

  • AI-generated prompts refresh every 7 days. Once Gladly AI writes prompts for a page, the same prompts show for up to 7 days. If you've changed a product page or your guidance and want new prompts sooner, contact Gladly.

  • To hide prompts on a page, add it as an exception. There's no on/off switch for a set of prompts. To stop prompts from showing on a page, add that page to Exceptions.

  • Default prompts are your safety net. If Gladly AI can't generate prompts for a page, your default prompts show instead, so always write a few good ones.

  • Prompts follow your Chat styling. To change how the buttons look, update your Chat's Style settings. See Create and Configure Enhanced and Basic Chat (Web).

  • Billing. There's no separate charge for on-page prompts. Conversations started from a prompt are billed the same way as any other Agentic Commerce conversation.

When to contact Gladly

Contact your Gladly team or Gladly Support if you want to:

  • Turn on on-page prompts for your organization.

  • Refresh AI-generated prompts before the 7 days are up.

  • Get help when prompts don't appear, or don't look right, after you add a CSS selector.
