# What does ‘Conversation was closed automatically’ in the Conversation Timeline mean?

Conversations related to abandoned calls are automatically closed. When this happens, the Conversation Timeline is updated to reflect this activity.

If there is an existing open Contact (e.g., an open SMS contact), then the Conversation will remain open.

As for a Chat Conversation, it will [automatically close](https://help.gladly.com/docs/configure-chat-session-settings#is-there-a-scenario-where-an-abandoned-chat-is-automatically-closed) if the Customer abandons the chat before being routed to an Agent.
