# Update Outbound Caller ID (CNAM)

Telephone carriers use Caller ID Name (also known as CNAM) to reveal a calling party's name. CNAM can represent a person, business, or organization and is shown as a string text under 15 characters.

There a few things to be aware of regarding CNAM:

- CNAM lookup is not guaranteed to occur. Some carriers receiving a call may never look up CNAM. Some Customers may actually pay for an application on their phones to look up CNAM.
- CNAM applies to landlines. For mobile, [Branded Calling](https://www.twilio.com/docs/voice/branded-calling) is used.
- CNAM lookup success is higher for local numbers than toll-free numbers. It can also take a few weeks for CNAM to apply. You can use public records for status on CNAM using websites like [https://apeiron.io/cnam](https://apeiron.io/cnam).
- There's no fee for when a carrier in the US looks up your CNAM.

Contact Gladly Support if you need to update your CNAM for your Gladly-procured phone number. Gladly Support can also assist with setting up Branded Calling for improved mobile identification, but please note that Branded Calling incurs additional costs charged by carrier.

- Please select the correct business impact (P1 to P4).
- Most requests should be sent as a P4.
